Recently, the young son of a retired policeman committed suicide in Baradari area of Bareilly. He went into depression due to unemployment. A similar incident happened in Nagjhiri of Ujjain. There too, a young man’s employment was lost due to lockdown and he committed suicide. The same story was repeated in Sector 66, Noida. According to the Mumbai-based think tank Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), in May, one crore people lost their jobs.
CMIE says that in the month of April, the work of 70 lakh people was lost. This month, ie till the 23rd of May, the unemployment rate in the country reached 10.59 per cent, while its weekly rate came to 14.7 per cent. In the year 2017-18, the 6.1 percent unemployment rate was said to be the highest in the last 45 years. In such a situation, the horrors of the current situation can be easily gauged. According to the organization, the unemployment rate is increasing in both urban and rural areas, but contrary to the general trend, the urban unemployment rate is much higher than rural. This is the first time since April-June 2020, when the urban unemployment rate will reach double digits.
Needless to say that the youth unemployment of the country has been suffering for years. A hallmark of how the neglect of the most serious question of youth has brought us to the fold, is recorded in last year’s National Crime Records Bureau report. Presenting the 2018 data, the NCRB reported that more unemployed youth committed suicide than farmers during this period. While 10,349 farmers committed suicide in 2018, 12,936 youths ended their lives being fed up with unemployment. This figure rose to 14,051 in 2019. Such figures show that on an average, 39 youth are committing suicide every day. In such a situation, the question on everyone’s tongue is, what are the state governments including the central government doing on the issue of unemployment?
The Bihar government has made it profitable to provide employment in rural areas, so that no person is deprived of employment. He has spoken about employment generation under MNREGA. Interestingly, last year too, Nitish Kumar had said the same thing, but in the last lockdown, somehow the people who returned to Bihar are not able to get full work in the MNREGA itself. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh seems to be competing with Bihar in this matter. The work of MGNREGA in Badaun district of the state has come to a standstill and the workers have had to eat in front of them. Overall, 1.44 lakh families in the district face employment crisis. In Jhansi, UP, twenty youth have committed suicide in the last 16 days, due to which unemployment and domestic discord stems from it.
Returning from the village to the city, here the government is preparing to give jobs after online training. There is talk of giving job opportunities to registered youth after 100 days of training through Google Meet, but so far such an initiative has not had much effect. If something happens, so much suicide cases will not come due to unemployment. In Loni Kalabhor, Pune, a 38-year-old youth coming from unemployment hit his wife and child with a sharp weapon, then hanged himself.
Almost every state government has its own claims about reducing unemployment, but no one is unaware of the reality of government claims. On the other hand, for the people who are losing their jobs, the central government has not brought any blueprint so far. We are adding more than one crore young people annually, who are coming out with some degree, and are going to sit at home.
