The fishermen were killed in the firing of Italian Marines, the Supreme Court will give its verdict on June 15 on giving compensation of 10 crores to the family

A bench headed by Justice Indira Banerjee of the Supreme Court said that it can ask the Kerala High Court to properly distribute the compensation amount among the heirs of the deceased. The case related to the dismissal of the pending case against the Italian Marines in India can also be passed. On April 9, the Supreme Court had asked the central government to deposit the amount of compensation paid to the kin of the deceased in the Kerala fishermen’s murder case by Italian marines.

A bench headed by the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court SA Bobde had said that before hearing the application of the Central Government, the Center should deposit the amount of compensation given by Italy in the Supreme Court account and the Supreme Court will release that money to the family of the fisherman. The court had also said that a week after the payment of the compensation amount, the Supreme Court will hear the central government’s application, in which the Center has asked that the pending case against the Italian Marines be closed.

During the last hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of the Central Government, had said that the relatives of the deceased are ready for 10 crore compensation amount. The Indian government spoke to the Italian government on behalf of the victim and they are ready for this amount. The Solicitor General had told the Supreme Court that Indians are much better at bargaining and we talked to the Italian government for the victim and they are ready for this amount. The Kerala government has also told the foreign secretary that the victim’s family is ready for this compensation amount.

Mehta had said that the criminal case is pending in the International Court and if the decision of the International Tribunal is accepted, then there will be no jurisdiction of the trial court. But the case can be closed only by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had said during the last hearing that it would not close the case without hearing the kin of the deceased and they should also be given adequate compensation.
