In an interview with Spotboye, Kamal Haasan had revealed, ‘Everyone used to call Rajesh Khanna as Kaka but I refused to call him Kaka. I was ready to call him Bade Bhaiya or Mr. Khanna but not Kaka. He was enraged by this. We spent a lot of time together. I was an actor coming from the South and he introduced me to Mumbai. He was the king of Hindi cinema. Rajesh Khanna had worked in the remakes of many South Indian films, so he often lived in Chennai. Thus began the friendship.

Kamal Haasan further said, ‘We spent a lot of time discussing cinema and life. He sometimes got philosophical about the inevitability of life. One time we went to see an American movie together and I decided to take him to a theater in the heart of the city. They didn’t know we were going to the public theatre. He probably hasn’t been to a public theater since becoming a star. When we arrived things were fine. He enjoyed a mediocre film.
Kamal Haasan told, ‘I thought if people came to know that Rajesh Khanna is present in the theatre, then there would be a stampede. Rajesh Khanna did not leave the film in the middle and watched till the film was over. After the show, the audience felt Rajesh Khanna was there. I became his bodyguard in the crowd. His shirt was torn but he was enjoying it to the fullest.
