Vaccine everyone by December? Government said – no deadline to complete vaccination

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharti Praveen Pawar gave this information in response to a question by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Lok Sabha MP Mala Roy. He said that vaccination is a continuous process in the country. It is being run under the supervision of the National Expert Group. He said that in view of the dynamic and evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, no definite timeline can be indicated for the completion of the vaccination campaign.

However, it is expected that by December 2021, the beneficiaries of 18 years and above will be vaccinated, Pawar said. Responding to another question by Rahul Gandhi, Pawar said that between August and December 2021, a total of 135 crore doses of the Covid-19vaccine are expected to be available.

There has been no delay in entering into procurement agreements with domestic vaccine manufacturers, he added. The minister said, advance payment has also been made to the producers for the supply of orders placed to them. A total of Rs 9,725.15 crore has been spent on the Covid-19vaccination program so far, which includes procurement of vaccines and operational cost of vaccines, the minister said.

Pawar also told that there is no shortage of Covid-19vaccines in the country. The vaccines being used in the country need to be kept in a temperature of two to eight degrees Celsius. There are 296 walk-in coolers and 57,640 ice-lined refrigerators in the country. These capacities are sufficient for routine vaccination.

He was also asked whether the government was aware that India is the world’s largest vaccine producer, yet less than 10 per cent of Indians have received a single dose of COVID vaccines. Responding to this, the minister said that as on July 20, about 34.5 per cent of the population of 18 years and above have received at least one dose of Kovid vaccine.
