The Congress has demanded the central government to consider removing the 50 percent limit for reservation. The party says that only after the removal of this limit, the Maratha community in Maharashtra and people in many other states will get its benefit. The party said this while supporting the amendment bill related to Other Backward Classes (OBC).

Congress’s allegation on the Center

Congress Parliamentary Party leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, while initiating the discussion on the ‘Constitution (127th Amendment) Bill, 2021’, slammed the government. He said that this bill had to be brought due to the mistake of the central government. He said that the Center has thrown the dice of constitutional amendment for the purpose of profit in the assembly elections of five states including Uttar Pradesh.

We are a responsible party: Adhir

Chowdhury raised the Pegasus espionage case, saying that if the government had agreed to discuss it, the deadlock would not have happened. However, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla interrupted and instructed him to stick to the subject. “We are participating in the discussion on this bill as it is a Constitution Amendment Bill. It needs the support of a two-thirds majority. We are a responsible party, so we are participating in it.

2018 issue raised in the house
The Congress leader referred to the work done for the OBCs, Scheduled Castes and Tribes during the previous governments of his party. He said that you (Minister) have every right to speak about the works of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but we want to ask why this constitutional amendment came to the fore?
Chaudhary said that the 102nd Constitutional Amendment Bill was brought in 2018, but with the constitutional status to the Backward Classes Commission, the right to determine the OBC list of states was taken away. We raised this issue at that point of time, you can see the record.

‘The majority did not work, had to bow before the public’

The Congress leader alleged that the government tampered with the 102nd amendment and ignored the opposition’s warnings. Targeting the government, he said, ‘If you have a majority, then no one cares. You don’t care about anyone. You want to bow down to the muscle power of the majority. But you had to bow before the voice of the people. “There is election in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, so you are bringing this so that people can be made happy,” Chaudhary alleged.

Center should consider reservation limit
Referring to the Supreme Court order in the Indira Sawhney case, he said, “With our support to this bill, we demand that the removal of the 50 per cent limit of reservation should be considered… in many states this limit is high. But you do it legally.’ “I urge that the sentiments of the people of the Maratha community should be respected. Consideration should be given to increasing the reservation limit and at the same time care should be taken that other weaker sections are not harmed.
