The death toll in Uttarakhand last Sunday has increased to 50. Today a total of 12 bodies have been recovered during the rescue operation. Rescue still continues in the Tapovan tunnel from where 5 bodies have been recovered today. At the same time, ITBP is conducting a search operation to find the missing people.

A joint rescue operation of the Army, the National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police have been on a war footing for the past one week to take out the stranded people at 520 MW NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad. Deputy Disaster Commandant Aditya Pratap Singh of the National Disaster Response Force said that the rescue operation is on.

Removal of debris and silt in the tunnel continues
The work of cleaning debris and silt is underway in the tunnel. Chamoli District Magistrate Swati S Bhadauria said that two of these bodies have been identified. One has been identified as Alam Singh of Narendranagar in Tehri district and the other has been identified as Anil, a resident of Kalsi, Dehradun.

Helicopter ready for emergency
The DM said that a helicopter is also ready on the spot so that if any person is found alive in the tunnel, then they can be provided with immediate medical care. Apart from this, according to information received from the sources of the State Disaster Response Force, a body was also recovered on Sunday from Raini village, which has not been identified yet. Ornaments, tattoos and other identification marks from the dead bodies are being protected by photography and videography.

50 bodies recovered so far
So far, 50 bodies have been recovered after the floods in the Rishiganga valley of Chamoli on February 7, while 162 others are still missing. These missing people include those trapped in the Tapovan tunnel. The 13.2 MW Rishiganga Hydroelectric Project was completely destroyed due to floods while Tapovan Vishnugad suffered extensive damage.
