IPS officer Rashmi Shukla appeared before the Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission on Thursday. Shukla was summoned in the case related to the violence at the war memorial in Pune in 2018. However, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh did not appear. Shukla, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, appeared before the commission but her statement could not be recorded as she sought additional time to file the affidavit.
Shukla told the commission that he was yet to receive some documents related to the Elgar Parishad program, a day before the violence, from the Pune Police. The date of Shukla’s next production is yet to be decided. A two-member inquiry commission headed by retired Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court JN Patel had issued summons to Rashmi Shukla and Parambir Singh on October 22 this year. Former Chief Secretary of Maharashtra Sumit Malik is the second member of this commission. During the violence at Koregaon Bhima in Pune district, Singh was Maharashtra’s Additional Director General (Law and Order) while Shukla was the Pune Police Commissioner.
A magisterial court in Mumbai on Wednesday declared Singh a “fugitive offender” in the recovery case registered against him. Singh had last visited office in May this year after which he went on leave. The state police told the Bombay High Court last month that it had no information about Singh. The Mumbai Police’s crime branch, which is probing the recovery case, sought to declare him an absconder, saying he could not be traced even after a non-bailable warrant was issued to the IPS officer.
