Earlier many banks including SBI alerted people about this. Now the cyber unit of the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an advisory in this regard.
22% charging station at public place not safe
Research in Cyber Security, ‘Alert Indians’, in February 2021, research in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad, found that 22% of the charging stations on Public Place were not safe or were already caught by hackers. Another study found that 33% of the connections in free WiFi available in public place were those who were pushing malware / viruses in phones or laptops, through which access to phones and laptops could reach hackers.

Cyber criminal hack mobile charging stations on public place. As soon as you place your phone there for charging, then a Crawler program or malware will be installed in your phone via your phone’s USB port. This will give access to the phone to the hacker.
Home Ministry has given this advice
- Avoid charging mobile phones at the charging stations available at public places.
- Keep the phone charger, battery bank with you, so that the charging station is not needed.
- If necessary, put your charger in an electrical socket on a wall and charge the phone.
- There is an option inside USB debugging in the phone’s settings – Install over ADB, always keep it off.
- Install an anti virus solution that can prevent data theft.
