The Supreme Court has asked a petitioner to inform the apex court about the persons arrested for allegedly putting up defamatory posters about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in connection with the anti-Covid-19 vaccination campaign and such cases. The court said it cannot give a comprehensive order to the police not to register an FIR for putting up posters criticizing the Centre’s vaccination policy.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah granted a week’s time to petitioner Pradeep Kumar Yadav to collect information on such cases and said that instead of relying on newspaper reports, he should have collected the information himself.

Yadav said such cases have been registered in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Lakshadweep and the police should be directed to give a copy of the FIR in such cases to the petitioner. To this the bench said, ‘We also read newspapers. The Lakshadweep dispute was somewhat different. The woman has been granted anticipatory bail by the Kerala High Court. There is no need to bring that controversy in this case. Which cases have been registered in Delhi and other places, you tell about them.

The court refused to issue directions to the police, saying it would tantamount to issuing notices to them. With this, the court listed the matter for hearing next week. The petitioner has sought quashing of the FIRs registered by the Delhi Police for allegedly putting up posters criticizing Modi in connection with the anti-Covid vaccination. The petition said that 25 people, including a 19-year-old youth, a 30-year-old e-rickshaw driver and a 61-year-old artisan, were arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly putting up defamatory posters of the Prime Minister in connection with the vaccination campaign.
