Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting has been called on 16 October. In this, organizational elections, upcoming assembly elections and the current political situation will be discussed. Party’s organization general secretary KC Venugopal gave this information by tweeting on Saturday. The meeting has been called in the backdrop of leaders of the ‘G23’ group of Congress demanding dialogue within the party and several leaders leaving the party in recent months.
Venugopal said, “The Congress Working Committee meeting has been called on October 16 at 10 am at the All India Congress Committee’s office, 24 Akbar Road, to discuss the current political situation, upcoming assembly elections and organizational elections.”
Sibal and Azad had demanded
The CWC is the supreme decision-making body of the Congress. A few days ago party sources had said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi has already indicated that the CWC meeting would be called very soon. Recently, senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal had demanded to convene a meeting of the CWC. Azad had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi urging her to convene an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee to discuss matters related to the party.
Congress is facing internal crisis
Sibal had also raised questions on the party leadership in the recent days amid the ruckus in the party’s Punjab unit and said that a meeting of the Congress Working Committee should be called to discuss the situation and organizational elections should be held. The CWC meeting is going to take place at a time when Sushmita Dev, Jitin Prasada, Luizinho Faleiro and several other leaders have left the Congress and joined other parties in the last few months.
It is believed that in this meeting of the CWC, a date or framework can be finalized regarding the election of the Congress President. Congress sources say that in this meeting, the preparations for the assembly elections to be held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur will also be discussed. Elections in these states are due early next year.
