Guidelines not issued for compensation on death from Kovid, Contest petition filed against Center in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court had ruled that it is the legislative duty of the NDMA to frame guidelines under which the minimum compensation amount should be provided in case of death due to Kovid.

The Supreme Court had said that it cannot issue a direction to the central government to fix a certain amount for compensation, but the national authority can fix the minimum amount for compensation to the kin of those who died of Kovid. The Supreme Court had also issued a direction to simplify the process of issuing death certificates in case of death from Kovid.

Petitioner advocate Ripak Kansal submitted that the central government is duty bound to comply with the order of the Supreme Court. In the matter of this order, the Center has not done anything so far and has kept silent. According to the affidavit filed by the Center in September 2021, the order has not been fully complied with. Till now guidelines regarding compensation in case of death have not been issued.
