How soon after the first dose of corona vaccine does the second dose benefit? Everyone is trying to find the answer to this question. Especially when the period between two doses of covishield has been increased in India. Earlier there was a difference of four to six weeks. Then it was increased to six to eight or 12 weeks. At the same time, in Britain this gap has been reduced. In such a situation, the common man is bound to get confused. But, some experts say that there is no need to worry. The second dose is effectively beneficial within six months of the first dose.
On the recommendation of the National Technical Consultancy Group (NTAGI) on immunization, the government last week increased the interval between two doses of anti-covid-19 vaccine covicshield to 12 to 16 weeks. Earlier this period was eight weeks. A day after this, Britain had reduced its interval from 12 weeks to eight weeks in view of the spread of the B1.617 variant of Indian origin.
What should be the duration?
There is less supply of vaccine in India. There has been talk of severe shortages from many states. At the same time, the interval between the two doses of the vaccine is extended. There is concern about this. Responding to concerns over an extended period between the two doses, immunologist Satyajit Rath said the vaccine application was ‘quite flexible’.
Once the four-week period is over after the first dose, the next dose may be given at any time for up to six months. According to scientists, vaccine supplements are safe. It does not matter when they were given. However, they will not have much ‘effect’ if they are given within one month of taking the first dose.
Rath of the National Institute of Immunology (NII) in New Delhi said, “Therefore, the dose of vaccine can be taken anytime from at least one month after recovering from Covid-19or taking the first dose.”
When do you get good results?
He stated, ‘Vaccine doses give good effect when given at any time within six months of taking the first dose. Therefore the first dose should not be taken before four weeks after recovering from the second dose or Kovid-19. ‘
Rath said that NTAGI is making these recommendations on the basis of evidence. He is trying to help in practical steps.
What to say on the decision of Britain?
Immunologist Vinita Bal responded when the gap was reduced in the UK at the same time as the difference between the dose of Kovishield in India was increased. He said that these decisions have been taken on the basis of ground reality. There is no answer in yes or no to whether this will have any effect on better handling of the new format.
Increasing the difference between vaccine doses in a country will allow more people to get vaccinated. Whereas in other countries, the pace of vaccination will increase as the gap decreases.
Guest Teacher at Pune’s Indian Institute of Science Education and Research said, “If adequate doses are available, then the second dose should be given at the appropriate time. The reason is that it will provide the best possible immunity under the current circumstances. ‘
He said that the immune response from a vaccine would begin to decrease over time. However, it is unlikely to reach a completely neutral level in 12 to 16 weeks. “Therefore, the second dose can still be obtained at intervals of 12 to 16 weeks,” said Bal.
The government last week increased the interval between two doses of anti-covid-19 vaccine covicshield to 12 to 16 weeks.
