Respiratory distress syndrome

Respiratory distress syndrome can occur in a newborn baby with a diabetes-prone mother. Diabetes can affect the fetus’s lungs and slow down lung development. This can cause the infant to have respiratory distress syndrome. In addition, lung problems such as transient tachypnea and persistent pulmonary hypertension can also occur.

Being overweight

Diabetes can cause a newborn to gain weight. During pregnancy, high blood glucose levels can cause the baby to gain weight rapidly, which can lead to a condition called macrosomia. In addition, there is a risk of perinatal asphyxia in the baby of a diabetic mother. In this situation, the fetus lacks oxygen. In many cases of perinatal asphyxia, the mother has been diagnosed with diabetes.

Congenital diseases

Children of type 1 diabetes mothers have a higher risk of congenital diseases or disorders. There can be heart disease, disability in the extremities and any spinal disorder. In addition, there may be problems related to the development and nerves of the baby.

Children with diabetes mother may have problems with growth and neurodevelopmental output in children. This may include slow brain development, sensory and language impairment, and neurosensory improvement such as hearing loss.

Neonatal hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia or low blood glucose may also occur in a diabetic mother’s infant. This can happen because of trying to control blood sugar before birth. It reduces the baby’s blood sugar rapidly and may cause complications such as breast damage.

Mental retardation can also be seen in children and this problem can last for life for children. These children have a slow learning ability and very little intellectual ability.

The child of a diabetic mother may also suffer from growth retardation. Early in pregnancy, fetal development may be slowed due to diabetes. The size of these babies is less than normal. It can be detected only at the beginning of pregnancy.
