New Delhi
Army Chief General MM Narwane on Thursday dispatched the 100th K-9 Vajra self-propelled Howitzer cannon from the manufacturing unit of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at Hazira near Surat. The Indian Army said that L&T has supplied 100 units of indigenously manufactured K-9 Vajra-T 155 mm self-propelled cannons.

L&T said in a statement that with the release of the 100th Howitzer cannon, the company has successfully completed the supply of all cannons under the current contract awarded to it by the Ministry of Defense in May 2017. The company said that it has maintained its record of supplying ahead of time. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the 51st K-9 Vajra from Hazira in January last year.

As part of its ‘Make-in-India’ initiative, the company set up a green-field manufacturing and testing facility at its Hazira manufacturing complex near Surat for the production of cannons. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the ‘Armored System Complex’ to the nation in Hazira in January 2018. L&T Defense had secured the agreement for this vessel through global bidding.

L&T was the main bidder with the South Korean defense company Hanwha Defense. JD Patil, Senior Executive Vice President (Defense and Smart Technology), L&T, said that production of complex devices like K-9 Vajra makes a significant contribution to the Indian economy. This creates new job opportunities, while helping to increase the country’s industrial ecosystem.
