Digital Desk, Tokyo. Japan is likely to expand its corona vaccination program to children under 12 in February next year. This information was given by the Ministry of Health of Japan on Wednesday. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare notified municipalities across the country to start preparation of vaccination schedules for children in the age group of 5 to 11 years.

The medical institutions responsible for the program should fully inform children and their parents or guardians about the effectiveness and safety of vaccines and obtain their consent, reports Xinhua news agency. The ministry said those institutions also need to provide proper initial treatment in case people being vaccinated develop side effects.

The immunization program will begin once permission from the government is granted, as a panel of the ministry is discussing whether this age group should be vaccinated. Last week, US pharmaceutical company Pfizer submitted an application to vaccinate children between the ages of 5 and 11 with a vaccine developed jointly with its German partner BioNTech.

Currently, the government has approved the use of the Pfizer-BioEntech vaccine and US drugmaker Moderna Vaccine for people 12 years of age or older, while the vaccine developed by British firm AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford can be used for those 18 years or older. Can be done for people of age.
