Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge will be the new Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. He will replace senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. The tenure of Rajya Sabha member Azad ends on February 15. According to information from sources, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has written a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu, requesting Kharge to be the Leader of Opposition in the Upper House.
According to information from official sources, Chairman Naidu has received his letter and has decided that only after Azad’s membership is over, he will take necessary action to recognize Kharge as Leader of Opposition. Indeed, Friday was the last day of Azad’s tenure in the Rajya Sabha. The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha started from 29 January and the first phase of the budget session in the Upper House was completed on Friday.
The meeting was adjourned after completion of the discussion on the budget in the Upper House on Friday. The second phase of the budget session will start on 8 March and will run till 8 April as part of the predetermined program. Azad is a member of Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir. Since the removal of most of the provisions of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and making it a Union Territory, the Legislative Assembly has not existed there.
A Dalit leader from Karnataka, Kharge was a Congress leader in the Lok Sabha between 2014 and 2019. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he had to face defeat in Gulbarga parliamentary seat. The 77-year-old Kharge was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time last year. He represents Karnataka in the Upper House.
