At that time Hema Malini had turned down the proposal of stars like Jeetendra to Sanjeev Kumar. It is said that Hema Malini was not giving any emotion to Dharmendra earlier. She was not interested in marrying a married man. Dharmendra wanted to divorce his first wife Prakash Kaur and marry Hema, but Prakash refused to divorce her.

It is said that during that time Sanjeev Kumar wanted to marry Hema and for this he took the help of Jitendra. Hema refused to link Sanjeev Kumar with him and then the actor never married. However, Hema liked Jitendra and wanted to marry him. According to reports, during the same time Jitendra was dating his childhood friend Shobha and he came to know about it. Shobha asked Jitendra to convince Hema and after that both of them got married.

After this Hema agreed to make Dharmendra her life partner. It is said that Hema’s father V.S. Ramanujam Chakravarti was strongly against her marriage to Dharmendra. Dharmendra and Hema got married after the death of Hema’s father.
