Known as the ‘Malika of Mangoes’ due to its weighty fruits, taste enthusiasts of the ‘Noor Jahan’ variety were left disappointed last year. But this time it has got a good crop due to the weather and its heavy mangoes have already been booked at higher prices before ripening. A few trees of ‘Noor Jahan’, a mango species believed to be of Afghan origin, are found in the Kathivada region of Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. This area is adjacent to Gujarat.

One fruit can weigh up to 3 kg.
Shivraj Singh Jadhav, a mango grower from Katthiwada, about 250 km from Indore, said on Sunday, “There are a total of 250 fruits on three Noorjahan mango trees in my orchard. The bookings have been done long back. People bought a mango from Noorjahan. Priced between Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.” He said that people who have booked Noorjahan mango in advance include lovers from Madhya Pradesh as well as neighboring Gujarat. Jadhav said, “This time the weight of Noor Jahan mango fruits is going to be between two to three and a half kilograms.”

Last year did not bear fruit
Meanwhile, Ishaq Mansoori, an expert in Noorjahan horticulture in Katthiwada, said, “This time the crop of Noorjahan has been good but due to the outbreak of Kovid-19, there has been little impact on the business of mangoes.” He told that in the last year 2020, the flowers of Nurjahan did not come to the trees, possibly due to the ill effects of climate change, due to which the amateurs were deprived of the special taste of this mango.

‘The kernels of Noorjahan weigh between 150 to 200 grams’
Mansoori said that in the year 2019, the average weight of the fruits of Noor Jahan was around 2.75 kg. Then buyers paid a high price of up to Rs 1,200 for just one fruit. Horticulture experts said that the Nurjahan trees usually start flowering from January-February and its fruits are ready for sale in early June. He told that the heavy fruits of Nur Jahan can grow up to a foot long and their kernels weigh between 150 to 200 grams.
