Digital Desk, New Delhi. Pakistan on Tuesday strongly opposed the move by India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, a group of four countries, for permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
This information has been given in a report of Pakistani newspaper Express Tribune.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram, participated in a debate and said there was no justification for creating new centers of privilege within the United Nations.
According to the report, Munir said that any country seeking a continuous presence on the Security Council should do so subject to the democratic process of elections by the General Assembly from time to time.
Referring to the Italy/Pakistan-led Uniting for Consensus (UFC) group’s effort to expand the 15-member council into a two-year non-permanent category, he said the group strongly opposes proposals for permanent membership for individual member states.
Ambassador Akram, Pakistan’s representative to the UN, said that the UFC believes that their proposal for comprehensive reform of the UNSC could become the best basis for an agreement.
According to the report, he cited the permanent members not agreeing on decisive action, saying that adding new permanent members would increase the chances of stagnation.
