Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a high-level meeting regarding the situation in Afghanistan. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also participated in this meeting, which lasted for about three hours. According to TV reports, along with the latest situation in Afghanistan, India’s future steps were also discussed in the meeting.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held this high-level meeting at a time when India’s Ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal and Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stankzai met a day earlier on Tuesday. For the first time, India formally held talks with the Taliban. Many Indian nationals are still stranded in Afghanistan. Apart from this, many Afghan citizens of minority community (Hindu and Sikh) also want to come to India. The government is running ‘Operation Devi Shakti’ to bring them to India, but after America’s departure from Afghanistan, this operation is stalled.
Indian Ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal and Taliban representative met at the Indian Embassy at the request of the Taliban. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Ambassador Mittal bluntly told the Taliban that Afghanistan’s land should not be used in any way for anti-India and terrorist activities. The focus of the talks was on the safety of Indians stranded in Afghanistan and their early return to their homeland. Apart from this, India also asked the Taliban leader that Afghan citizens who want to come to India, especially minorities, should be allowed to come. The Taliban leader assured the ambassador that positive steps would be taken on these issues.
