Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a high level meeting at the United Nations on Monday. He said that land has always been given importance in India. Not only this, people also consider it as their mother. Today there is tremendous pressure on land and its resources. It has to be reduced.
The Prime Minister said this while digitally addressing the High Level Dialogue at the United Nations on ‘desertification, land degradation and drought’.
The PM said that land degradation has affected two-thirds of the world. If this is not taken care of, it will undermine the foundations of societies, economies, food security, health and quality of life and security.
The Prime Minister addressed the preliminary session as chair of the 14th session of the United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD).
He said that land is a fundamental part of life and livelihood and everyone needs to understand it.
Modi said, ‘It is sad that land degradation has affected two-thirds of the world today. If this is not taken care of, it will undermine the very foundations of our societies, economies, food security, health and quality of life and security.

“So we have to reduce the tremendous pressure on land and its resources,” he said. There is still much to be done ahead. Together we can do it.’
The Prime Minister said that land has always been given importance in India. People also consider this as their mother. India has made land degradation an issue in international forums. In the last 10 years, India has added 30 lakh hectares of land.
This high-level dialogue is to assess progress made in efforts to combat desertification, land degradation and drought. Along with this, a United Nations action plan will also be prepared to fight against desertification and revive the ecosystem.
