Exactly two months back, on 8th August, a complaint came to the Delhi Police. Someone online was harassing the girls and teachers of a school in North Delhi. Obscene messages were sent on WhatsApp, morphed pictures were sent on social media. The teachers were getting dirty calls from international numbers. The school also said that this guy used to enter the online classes without the approval of the administrator. After questioning the victims, the cyber cell started adding links.
A 19-year-old boy turned out to be behind the whole incident. Mahavir Kumar… That’s his name. According to the police, Mahavir, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, targeted more than 50 teachers and students.

On the complaint of the school, the police registered a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POCSO Act and IT Act. DCP (North) Sagar Singh said, “Based on the clues received from the school, our team started work. After questioning victims, teachers and parents, we identified a number of calls through 33 WhatsApp virtual numbers, 5 Instagram profiles and fake caller IDs. We analyzed the IP details of WhatsApp, Instagram and fake email IDs. The culprit was identified as Mahavir, a resident of Patna.

According to the DCP, while checking the mobile numbers, it was found that the victim had received a call from a number three years ago. This girl was stocked with profiles made on the same number. After arresting him from Patna, the police interrogated Mahavir and he confessed to the crime.
According to a police officer, ‘Mahavir used voice changing apps on the call to hide his identity. He used to morph nude pictures of victims through the app itself and then uploaded them on fake Instagram profiles created in their names. Many porn photos and videos have been found from Mahavir’s mobile phone.

According to the police, ‘When we checked social media accounts, we found that he used to blackmail people to give phone numbers so that they could use them. However, no financial transaction took place. According to another official, ‘Mahavir claimed that he liked a girl but later he started creating fake IDs on Instagram in search of more friends.’
