Many faces of party President Sonia Gandhi were seen in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Saturday. When he did the work of persuading, he also showed a strong attitude. Who takes the decision in the party? On this, Gandhi retaliated in response to questions from disgruntled Congress leaders (G23). She said, ‘I am the full time and permanent president of the party.’ He gave a smirk and said that there is no need to talk to me through the media. Say what you have to say openly.
The G23 leaders, led by Kapil Sibal, raised questions on the party’s decision-making process. It was feared that former President Rahul Gandhi was taking all the decisions. Sonia Gandhi replied to this on Saturday.
In his speech, he pulled up Congress leaders for talking to the media. Said, ‘I have always appreciated openness. There is no need to talk to me through the media. So let’s all have a free and honest discussion. But what is said outside the four walls of this room should be a collective decision of the CWC.
G23 leaders were on target
The Congress President targeted some leaders of the ‘G23’ group including Sibal and gave gestures. In the first week of August last year, 23 senior Congress leaders wrote a letter raising questions about the party’s style, culture and high command. These leaders included veteran leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma, Manish Tewari, Bhupendra Hooda, Prithviraj Chavan, Shashi Tharoor. In the political corridor, it is called G-23.
The Congress president insisted, “If you allow me to speak, I am a full-time and active president.” In the last two years, many colleagues and especially youth leaders have taken up the responsibility of leading and taking the policies of the party to the people.
Giving advice to the G23 leaders, he said, ‘I have always appreciated candor. There is no need to talk to me through the media. That’s why we all have open and honest discussions here. But what goes beyond these boundaries should be a collective decision of the CWC.
some issues also discussed
Sonia also told in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting that the process of election of the President was to be completed by June 30, but it had to be postponed due to the Corona epidemic. Now its outline will be presented.
Sonia Gandhi targeted the Narendra Modi government on the issues of farmers’ agitation, Lakhimpur Kheri violence, inflation, foreign policy and China’s aggression. Referring to the upcoming assembly elections, the Congress president said, “We will face many challenges, but if we stay united and disciplined and focus only on the interest of the party, I am sure we will do well.”
Sonia Gandhi also informed that preparations have started for the assembly elections to be held in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. Referring to the organizational elections, he said, “The entire organization wants the Congress to be strong again. But for this it is necessary that there is unity and the interest of the party is kept paramount. Above all there is a need for self-control and discipline.
Why was the meeting needed?
The CWC meeting came in the backdrop of leaders of the ‘G23’ group of the Congress demanding dialogue within the party and several leaders quitting the party in recent months. Recently, senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal had demanded to convene a meeting of the CWC.
Azad had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi urging her to convene an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee to discuss matters related to the party. Sibal had also raised questions on the party leadership in the past amidst the ruckus in the party’s Punjab unit. It was said that this situation should be discussed by convening a meeting of the Congress Working Committee. Also organizational elections should be conducted. Sibal had said, “The party does not have a permanent president, but decisions are being taken. Who is making the decisions, I don’t even know.’
