Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Friday expressed deep grief over the killing of Danish Siddiqui during a coverage of Taliban’s “atrocities” in Kandahar. In a message, Ghani reiterated his government’s firm commitment to freedom of expression and the protection of free media and journalists in Afghanistan.
“I am deeply saddened by the shocking news that Danish Siddiqui, a photojournalist for Reuters, was killed while covering the Taliban atrocities in Kandahar,” Ghani said.
Ghani’s message was released by the Afghan Embassy here. He said, ‘I also extend my condolences to Siddiqui’s family and the media family, I reiterate my government’s firm commitment to the freedom of expression and protection of journalists and journalists.’
Afghanistan’s ambassador to India, Fareed Mamundaje, said Siddiqui was killed in Kandahar on Thursday night while he was on assignment.

Responding to questions related to Siddiqui’s death in Afghanistan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi here said that the government is in touch with the family of the photojournalist. “Our ambassador in Kabul is in touch with the Afghan authorities,” he said. Fierce battle between Afghan forces and Taliban
Afghanistan’s Tolo News quoted sources as saying that Siddiqui was killed during clashes (between Afghan forces and Taliban fighters) in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar. Fierce fighting continues in Kandahar and especially Spin Boldak.
The Taliban was ousted from power by US-led forces in 2021. Now the US is withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan, so Taliban fighters are trying to capture different parts of the country.
Afghanistan has seen a series of terrorist attacks in the past weeks after the US withdrew a large part of its troops. The US has set a deadline of August 31 for the full withdrawal of its troops.
