Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi may be very active in politics but she has not contested any election till now. Now inside the party, they have started demanding to contest from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has filed an application in this regard before the party’s state election committee. Karti has appealed that Priyanka Gandhi Vadri be made to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Harikrishnan Vasantkumar of Congress won the Lok Sabha election from Kanyakumari seat. He defeated Pon Radhakrishnan of BJP by nearly 3 lakh votes here. Vasantkumar, who was counted among the big businessmen of Tamil Nadu, died in August 2020 due to the Corona epidemic. Kanyakumari seat is vacant since then. The Election Commission had also announced the Lok Sabha by-election in Kanyakumari seat along with the assembly elections in five states.
The by-election in Kanyakumari will be held on 6 April along with the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The party, however, has not announced the name of any candidate for the Lok Sabha seat. Meanwhile, Congress workers have demanded that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra be made to contest on this seat. In view of this, party MP Karti Chidambaram has filed an application before the State Congress Election Committee. He has requested that Priyanka Gandhi be declared a candidate in the by-election for Kanyakumari seat.
Earlier, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has also contested from Wayanad in Kerala. He first contested the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi. In the 2019 elections, Rahul had filed nominations from two places. He lost the election from Amethi. He is currently a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad.
