These officials are helping such students in various states, who are caught in lockdown or are suffering from this disease, from medicine to food, to ration and books.
Shashank Shekhar Singh, a 2017 batch IRS officer, has formed a volunteer group with his batchmates and seniors to help such needy students. His group includes officers from different services ranging from their batchmates.
How did the idea of helping students come?
Nbt online Talking to the IRS, Shashank Shekhar said that suddenly one day it came to mind that people from different parts of the country are asking for help on Twitter. Some need medicine, some need ration and food… I thought that there would be hundreds of voices of students living away from their homes. To help such students, I formed a volunteer group with my batchmate and IRS officer Chetan Sharma, Harikesh Singh, 2017 batch IAS Anand Sharma, Delhi Zoo director and senior IFS Ramesh Pandey sir. Gradually many senior officers and batchmates also joined our group.
About 1000 calls came from different parts of the country
Shashank said, ‘We started this initiative on April 24-25. Since then, we have received calls from about 1000 needy students. Out of these, assistance has been provided to about 200 students. The remaining students will be given help this week. He told that we are getting calls from Tripura to Jammu and Kashmir, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengal and many areas of UP.
Shashank said, what kind of calls come
Shashank further said, ‘Most of the calls are from ill students or from students whose money has been lost and at such times they do not want to ask the family. Seeing the urgency of their call, we contact our batchmates or senior officers spread across the country and deliver the goods or medicines to them. Students who need books, order them online or go to the shop and ask them to get the book. Later we transfer the money online to the shopkeeper.
We have also been students, we can understand their problems very well
IRS officer Shashank told that we too were students at one time and used to prepare for the exam by staying away from home. We can understand the problem of these students very well.
