ATS has made three new arrests in the Uttar Pradesh conversion case. The ATS on Friday arrested three people from Nagpur in connection with the FIR registered in Lucknow under the state’s anti-conversion law. ADG Law and Order Prashant Kumar said that the three were arrested from Ganeshpeth area of Nagpur city on Friday night. Further action will be taken by bringing the accused to Lucknow.
In this case, on Saturday, ADG Law and Order Prashant Kumar told that a gang was exposed in the conversion case in the past by the Uttar Pradesh Police, in which 5 people were sent to jail. In the same case, 3 more people were arrested from Nagpur in Maharashtra on Friday. He is now being brought to Lucknow.
There was an arrest last month too.
The three arrested accused have been identified as Prasad Rameshwar Kavale from Nagpur, Kausar Alam Shaukat Ali Khan from Jharkhand and Bhupriya Bando Devidas Mankar from Gadchiroli in Maharashtra. The three accused were living in Hanspuri under Ganeshpeth police station area. The UP ATS had also arrested some people last month and claimed to have busted a nationwide gang of converts. A case was registered in this regard at Gomtinagar police station in Lucknow.
The law was implemented last year
The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversions Ordinance, 2020, promulgated in November last year, bans illegal conversions. It only invalidates the marriage performed for the purpose of conversion. Under this law, there is a provision of imprisonment for a maximum period of 10 years and a maximum fine of Rs 50,000.
