What is the Afghan connection to drugs worth 2500 crores found in Delhi? Read the inside story of ‘Operation Kandahar’

The Special Cell of Delhi Police has caught the biggest consignment of drugs till date. 354 kg of A-grade heroin worth Rs 2,500 crore has been seized in the international market. Four key members of the cartel have been arrested. Among them there is also a chemical expert who used to convert crude powder into pure heroin. The network of this cartel is spread in many countries including Canada, Portugal, Afghanistan.

Experts from Afghanistan used to come to Delhi who used to convert raw material into pure heroin. One such person has been arrested who is a resident of Kandahar. A Kashmiri man has also been arrested. Apart from this, two members of the Punjab wing of the cartel have also been arrested. Apart from drugs, 100 kg of chemical used to prepare pure heroin has also been seized from them.

How was the whole game?

  • Opium grown in Afghanistan was secretly exported along with other goods. From there talc stones, gypsum powder, basil seeds and other items are exported. The drugs were kept in gunny bags or cartons.
  • All the goods would be packed in containers and taken to Chabahar Port of Iran. From there the ship would leave for Mumbai Port.
  • The goods would then be sent to makeshift factories in Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. Pure heroin would have been prepared through extraction.
  • Experts from Afghanistan would come to Delhi and process heroin with the help of special chemicals.
  • After the drugs were prepared, they were sent to other parts of the country including Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir.

What is the Afghan connection to the drugs cartel?
According to the police, the entire cartel was being run under the guise of exporting legitimate goods. Hiding the goods along with the rest of the goods and sending them to Chabahar Port of Iran. From there the goods would land at Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. Here drugs and other items would be separated and sent to makeshift factories. A special expert from Afghanistan would come to Delhi who would process the drugs. Makes it purer so that it can be sold. One such person, Hazrat Ali, has been caught. He is a resident of Kandahar.

How was Operation Kandahar completed?

  • The Special Cell of Delhi Police came to know that a person named Rizwan is dealing in drugs between Delhi and Madhya Pradesh.
  • On July 5, news was received about Rizwan’s movement. When he was caught by laying a trap, he got 1 kg of heroin.
  • During the investigation, Rizwan told that he works under an Afghani, Isha Khan.
  • Khan asked Jiwan to meet Gurpreet Singh and Gurjot Singh of Punjab. Both were running a drug racket from Sector 65 of Faridabad.
  • Both were caught by putting raid in Faridabad. Both of them had access to two cars. 166 kg of heroin was recovered from one and 115 kg of heroin from the other.
  • Another 70 kg heroin was found from the bed box of his flat. The police were also surprised to see such a huge quantity of drugs.
  • On the spot of Rizwan, the police arrested Hazrat Ali. Heroin and chemicals were found from him.


According to the police, Gurpreet and Gurjot said that they work for a Portuguese handler, Navpreet Singh. Gurpreet had met him during his stay in Kapurthala jail. Navpreet’s work is spread across Afghanistan, Iran and Canada. According to the police, this module is part of a larger network.
